Short version: tap Start Video Chat, allow your camera and microphone when the browser asks, check that Video is selected on the match page, and press Start. You’re matched with one person. Don’t click? Press Next after a few seconds. No account, no download.
That’s the whole flow. The rest of this guide is about the small things that trip people up the first time — the permission pop-up nobody reads, the mode switch that’s easy to miss, and the buttons you’ll want to know about before you need them.
Step 1 — Open the match page: no registration, no login
Every Start button on this site, including the one on the homepage, goes to the same place: the match page. When it opens, you’re signed in as a guest quietly in the background. You won’t be asked for an email, a phone number or a username — it’s video chat without registration, and without a login screen either.
People are sometimes suspicious of that. Fair. But it also means there’s nothing to fill in and nothing to verify before your first conversation. If you later want to keep the people you’ve met, the Follow button (more on it below) is what does that — not a profile form.
Step 2 — Choose video, voice or text
The match page has three modes: Video, Voice and Text. It opens on Video, because that’s what most people come for. If you’d rather not be on camera yet, switch to Voice or Text before you press Start. The homepage can’t choose this for you — it always happens on the match page.
| Mode | Camera | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Video | On | Face-to-face chat, the full experience |
| Voice | Off | Talking while you’re not camera-ready, or on a slow connection |
| Text | Off | Quiet places, shy first chats, typing in a language you’re learning |
A lot of first-timers start on Text, get comfortable, and switch to Video a few chats later. Nothing wrong with that.
Step 3 — Allow the camera and microphone
For a video match, your browser asks for permission to use the camera and mic. This pop-up comes from the browser, not from Chit Chat, and it looks slightly different everywhere:
- iPhone (Safari): a grey box near the top asks to use the camera and microphone. Tap Allow.
- Android (Chrome): a panel slides up from the bottom. Choose “While using the site” or “Allow”.
- Desktop Chrome or Edge: a small box drops down from the left side of the address bar.
The most common mistake is dismissing that box by accident. The browser then remembers “no” and stays quiet next time, so it looks like the site is broken.
If your camera shows black or nobody can hear you
- Tap the lock or settings icon next to the address bar and set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then reload.
- On iPhone, also check Settings → Safari → Camera and Microphone. If they’re set to Deny, the site can’t ask.
- Close other apps that use the camera — a video call app, the camera app, a recording tool. Only one can hold it at a time, on most phones.
- On a laptop, check for a physical privacy shutter or a keyboard key that disables the webcam. It happens more than you’d think.
- Still nothing? Try Voice mode to confirm your mic works, then come back to Video.
Step 4 — Press Start and meet one person
Matching is random and one-on-one. You don’t browse a list and pick someone; the system pairs you with someone. Usually that takes a few seconds. Sometimes a little longer.
There are no rooms and no group calls here — it’s always you and one other person. That’s the point, really. If you want to know more about how the pairing works, we wrote it up in what random video chat is and how matching works.
Step 5 — Stay, skip, or keep them
What you can do once you’re in a call, and right after it:
- Next. Moves you on to someone new. In a video match it becomes available after a few seconds, so both of you get a real look before anyone skips.
- Follow. If the conversation was good, follow them. Matching is random, so you may not land on the same person again by chance.
- Report / Block. These live on the person’s profile, not in the call: take a screenshot first, then find them in your call history. Report lets you pick a reason, add a short description and attach the screenshot; Block stops that person contacting you. You can see and undo blocks later in Settings.
The Next button is what most people get wrong — in both directions. Some skip after one second and never have a real chat. Others sit through an awkward minute because skipping feels rude. It isn’t. For the bit in between, our guide on how to talk to strangers online has openers that actually work on camera.
What does it cost?
It’s free to start. New visitors get a few free matches, so you can see how it works without paying anything. After those, calls are paid with coins. A few seconds before a call starts costing coins, the call shows you a notice — nothing is charged silently.
Before your first chat: a 30-second checklist
- Good light in front of you, not behind you. A window at your back turns you into a silhouette.
- Phone propped up, not in your hand. Shaky video gets skipped fast.
- Headphones if you’re somewhere noisy — they also stop echo.
- Nothing personal in frame: mail with your address, a school badge, your street through the window.
That last one is about safety, and it’s worth two more minutes of reading: is it safe to talk to strangers online?
Ready? Open the match page, check the mode, press Start.
FAQ
Do I need to register or log in first?
No. When you open the match page you are signed in as a guest in the background. There is no sign-up, no login and no email, phone number or password to enter before your first chat.
Can I start without turning my camera on?
Yes. Video is the default mode, but the match page also has Voice and Text. Pick one of those before you press Start and your camera stays off.
Why can’t I press Next straight away?
In a video match the Next button unlocks after a few seconds. It gives both people a moment to actually see each other before anyone skips.
Is Chit Chat free?
It is free to start: new visitors get a few free matches. After those, calls are paid with coins. When a call is about to start costing coins, the call shows you a notice a few seconds beforehand.
Do I have to download an app?
No. Chit Chat runs in mobile and desktop browsers. If you use it often you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app.
