Getting started

What is random video chat, and how does the matching work?

Updated September 30, 2026 · 7 min read

Random video chat pairs you, one-on-one, with a stranger you didn’t choose. You press Start, a face appears, and you either talk or press Next for someone else. No profiles to browse, no rooms, no audience.

In short: you press Start and meet someone. But the details — what “random” really means, why you can’t pick, why it’s never a group — change how you use it. So here they are.

What actually happens after you press Start

On Chit Chat the Start button opens the match page. You’re signed in as a guest in the background (no form), you pick a mode, and the system pairs you with someone. That’s the “random” part: not chosen from a list, not ranked by looks, just whoever is next.

Then the call opens. For the first few seconds of a video match the Next button is locked — both of you get a proper look before anyone can skip. After that it’s up to you.

The step-by-step version, including camera permissions, is in how to start a video chat.

What does 1 on 1 (1v1) chat mean?

It means exactly two people: you and one other person. You’ll also see it written 1v1, 1:1 or one-on-one — same thing. Every match here is a private call between two people. There are no chat rooms here, and no group video.

This matters more than it sounds. In a room, the loudest person runs the conversation and everyone else watches. In a 1-on-1 video chat there is nobody to hide behind — which is exactly why the conversations tend to be better. You ask, they answer, you actually listen. It also means nobody else is watching you.

If you’ve been searching for “1 on 1 video chat” specifically, this is what you were after: one stranger, one conversation, your pace.

Can I choose who I meet?

No — and that’s worth being clear about, because plenty of sites imply otherwise. Chit Chat has no gender filter, no country filter and no interest tags. Matching is random.

What you can do:

  • Skip. Next moves you on to someone else. No explanation owed.
  • Keep. Follow the people you liked. Matching is random, so you may not land on them again — Follow is how you find them.
  • Remove. From their profile (it’s in your call history): Block stops someone contacting you, and Report sends us a reason, a description and a screenshot.

Here’s the counter-intuitive part: people who skip less usually end up with better chats. The first ten seconds of almost any conversation with a stranger are awkward. Skipping at second three means you only ever see the awkward part.

Is it always video?

No. The match page has three modes — Video, Voice and Text — and opens on Video. Voice keeps your camera off but lets you actually hear someone. Text is quiet and slow in a good way; plenty of people use it to practise a language before speaking it out loud.

You choose the mode on the match page itself, before pressing Start. You can change it between chats.

Is random video chat free?

On Chit Chat it’s free to start. New visitors get a few free matches, which is enough to find out whether you like it. After that, calls are paid with coins, and a call shows you a notice a few seconds before it starts costing coins.

Be sceptical of any site that says video chat with strangers is completely free forever. Live video is expensive to run, so the money comes from somewhere: ads, selling data, or paid features. We’d rather say it plainly.

Who random video chat is actually good for

Some honest use cases, roughly in order of how often they come up:

  • Late-night boredom. Everyone you know is asleep, you want a real conversation, not a feed.
  • Language practice. Speaking with a stranger is lower-stakes than with a teacher. Start on Text if you’re nervous.
  • Getting over shyness. A conversation you can end with one tap is a gentle way to practise small talk.
  • Curiosity. You find out what an ordinary evening looks like somewhere else.

And who it isn’t for: anyone under 18, and anyone who needs to know exactly who they’ll talk to. Random means random.

Is it safe?

Safer than its reputation, if you treat it like talking to a stranger on a train: friendly, but you don’t hand over your address. The tools are Next, Block and Report, and the habits matter more than the tools. We go through the real risks — and the scams worth recognising — in is it safe to talk to strangers online?
